I am now in my 21st year of mothering. Recently, my mother and I were having a conversation, and she said something profound: we often think we are teaching our children, but in reality, they are teaching us. How true this is! Mothers impart so many lessons to their children, yet what our children teach us is equally profound and life-changing. Mothering has shaped me into who I am today.
The longer I am a mother, the more amazed I become at Heavenly Father's plan for us and how being mothers and fathers plays a significant role in that plan. It is through parenthood that we begin to understand the depth of God's love for us. We realize that our Heavenly Father loves us even as we make mistakes and is proud of us every time we rise after we fall. He forgets our errors and hopes we learn from them, becoming a little better each day.
I am grateful for this understanding as I raise my own children.
Each of my sons arrived one at a time, and each was welcomed and loved uniquely. With each birth, I would gaze into their little newborn eyes, hold them close, kiss their cheeks, and feel their tiny fingers wrap around mine. In those moments, I knew that no sacrifice would be too great for their happiness and well-being.
My soul has been stretched as I have learned patience and longsuffering. I have discovered the meaning of sacrifice and unconditional love. I have faced challenges that tested me in the refiner's fire and emerged with a more loving heart. I have learned to give even when I thought I had nothing left to give. The love inherent in motherhood removes selfishness from your heart if you allow it. I never knew I could love this deeply; I would truly give my life for my boys.
I have also found that gratitude for simple things creates a happier day. I have learned to expect less and appreciate moments more. I have become more flexible, which is quite a feat for me!
I have discovered just how strong I really am!
