June 2014
For several reasons the past three weeks have been exhilarating. One is that Omaha is so much better than I imagined. It is truly beautiful here. I love the rolling green hills and the plentiful trees. I love sitting on our back deck and watching the beautiful Omaha sunsets. We live in such a pretty neighborhood and the people here are genuine and friendly. I haven't missed the mountains very much because there is so much beauty around me.
One morning I drove to the Winter Quarters to attend the 6 am session with the Omaha Stake. The drive there was breathtaking. I drove along a freeway marked with green hills and valleys and on that particular morning there were white mists here and there making it so beautiful as the sun was rising. After going to the temple with Sharon and Thad, Sharon and I drove to the special cemetery called Lallabye Hill where her little Jacob is buried. (infant son who died within an hour after his early birth) It was a tender moment in an incredibly beautiful place. I don't think I have ever been in such a beautiful cemetery besides Arlington and with my beautiful sister at such a tender little place.
I have enjoyed driving all around town. Omaha is big enough to be interesting and fun but still small enough to be charming and pastoral. I can drive along a main road and still see deep green cornfields off the side of the road here and there. It is beautiful and peaceful.
The storms here are fantastic! Jonathan put it right, "Olympus might be in New York City, but I have strong reason to believe that Zeus has a summer home in Omaha...." And, this is true! We have had numerous thunderstorms since we have been here. The first one we had produced golf ball sized hail. For real! That was a first for me... to see that! The second one came when we were all sitting on the back deck having a family planning meeting. And we noticed the clouds rolling in. There was massive wall cloud forming above our heads. We were amazed. After which a huge storm hit. The wind howled and the lighting and thunder crashed and the rain came down for hours. I think we got about 8 inches of rain that night. I kid you not! It rained hard until 5 am. We watched a great movie that night called, "Saving Mr. Banks." It was a cozy fun family time while the lightning flashed on and on. It was kind of cool when all of our cell phones buzzed with an emergency alert about flash floods all at the same time. Welcome to Nebraska! The weather here is really exciting.
The storms come and sometimes go very quickly but I think they come about every other day. Last night we watched one from a restaurant window and marveled at it. There were sky rockets going off at the same time. So cool. Then we proceeded to drive home into the storm. We are really enjoying the crazy weather.
Scott: "I love my swimming teacher. I really love all the hills and the storms. I am really looking forward to school. I really love church. I love the way the primary does spotlights where they roll a dice and if it says a language we sing a welcome in whatever language we roll on the dice. We play games. My teacher is really nice and she does really fun games in primary. There is this game where on the board where the teacher asks questions and you choose points and the questions are harder according to the number of points. And there are songs included in the questions.
I love the that there is lots of lightning .. including floods a river going down the road. I like the constant lightning.
