Yesterday Steve and I spoke in church.
It was a blessing. Serving is a blessing. I enjoyed, treasured, needed to feel the spirit directing me as I prepared the talk. My preparation was easy, the things I needed to share just seems to flow. It was the right topic for me, something dear to my heart. Repentance.. renewal.... Becoming, growing and blooming as children of God.
-best sacrament mtg of the year
-one woman who was visiting said that my talk was an answer to her prayers. She was in tears.
anyway.. we received a lot of compliments. It is nice to know one can make a difference and help others.
Steve spoke on PRIDE, the universal sin. He has such a handsome voice and knows how to put his words together so well. I love to listen to him.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve. I LOVE teaching the Sunbeams primary. They are such a bright spot in my life. I look forward to being with them every week and they come running to me. First and foremost, I wanted to be a mother. I wanted to love and shape precious little people. I am grateful I can still do this at this stage of the game.
I must strive to stay by the tree. For a little while now, I lost the spirit. I prayed to have it back. What did I do to lose it? All I can say I was spiraling down, struggling. My faith flickered (not by testimony but my confidence in the Lord-- confidence in myself--) the heavenly connection was gone. I cannot do this life without my Heavenly Father and Savior beside me. I will strive to keep the spirit with me. I will work at trusting in my Heavenly Father in my circumstance.
I must say that never before have I felt such anguish right before I was about to speak than I did yesterday. I was so deeply sad. I am usually so excited right before giving a talk. (I am ready! Prepared! Filled with the spirit! Anxious to serve and share!) But, I was so sad. We had left Jacob at home (Jacob is struggling right now) What more can I do? What is there to do? My heart breaks, I feel I have no control or influence. There are many reasons for feeling this way. I am losing heart over my family. It is the saddest thing I have ever experienced. I have prayed for many years.
As I finished up my talk, I found myself on my knees, crying, asking Father in Heaven to be with me. I poured out my heart, told him all that I was feeling.
The anguish I felt sitting on the stand waiting to give my talk was this: The closer I am to God and the more I love the Gospel and know it is true, the more pain I feel in watching my children's struggle.
BUT-- let's look at the bright side ( so here I go)
Eric is still kind and good. Though I feel his struggle, he is hanging in there.
Joseph has met with his bishop twice just lately. The bishop has challenged him to pray and he is.
Jonathan meets with the missionaries. They are making a difference. Jon has attended church twice in the past month. He has met with the bishop in his singles ward and in our ward (Bishop Davis) He is trying.
Michael is still willing to go to church and bless the sacrament. Though he doesn't enjoy it and feels he has NO friends in our ward (and it is true.. there is no one his age :( Why oh why? Lots of beautiful girls have moved in.. no boys. No one his age. I am trying to help him
Jacob is at a crossroads. He has friends doing things they shouldn't. He doesn't like anyone in our ward. He likes some friends in other wards. Why oh why? So far, he is choosing the right. The choices placed in front of him shake him up and cause him to want to get closer to the church. But he struggles fiercely. He says he doesn't believe. Yet he feels drawn to the Gospel especially when he faces the dark world. He sees the difference. I am praying so hard for him ..... and all of my children.
Scott... I sense I am losing him. He is starting to separate from me. I think this is developmentally appropriate for a boy of his age. So not to worry right? But, I do worry. I don't see him grasping and embracing the Gospel as I have in the past. This worries me! What is not happening? He has many friends who aren't members of the church. I think hanging out with them has made him a bit rough around the edges. (not that he is swearing or doing anything wrong but his overall attitude isn't as tender, but maybe this is just him leaving behind his sweet childhood--- :(
Steve.... so caught up in real estate, making money. Is this wrong? Maybe not. But, he isn't with me either most of the time. I have to invite him to pray every time. He doesn't lead us. His thoughts seem to be far from things of the spirit. Etc. Etc.
I have felt so alone. Alone in the struggle with so much opposition against my efforts. I lost heart. The spirit left me as well. I began experiencing a faith crisis. When I went to the temple last, I struggled feeling peace. I have struggled to pray, to want to pray, to believe. I have struggled to care much about any of the important things .. . and it has been awful, but I didn't know what to do. Nothing helped. Talk about scary.
So, what a blessing it was to speak in church and feel needed. The Lord blessed and guided me. Based on what people said to me, (all but one I didn't type here for fear of appearing boastful--) I made a difference. And, that's nice. Thank you Heavenly Father. Stay by me. Help me see.
If my reality needs to change so be it. If my greatest work (raising a family) turns out to be very challenging and disappointing, so be it.
BUT-- let's look on the bright side: Look at the progress my children are making. I must trust in the Lord. I also must allow my children their agency and space to make their decisions. I must always find ways to love them ..show them in word and deed that I do.
So Back to the title of this post: STAY by the Tree
I must stay by the tree. How will I do this in the face of so much opposition? So much daily irritation and sorrow and so little love? Well, I tell you this, when I prayed and asked the Lord, "What Lack I Yet?" I received an answer: it was, "go to bed earlier." And, just like the message in my talk, there was my customized revelation. Simple. I will obey that prompting and see what comes next. I will get up earlier. I will study the Gospel. I will study the scriptures. I will stay by the tree.

Scott's Birthday #10 -- He's a Double Digit!
Scott has officially become a double digit! This marks a step up in our house. More privileges come with being a double digit, like getting to stay up later... but wait.. Scott does that all the time. I guess that comes with being the youngest and being an amazing person who has tremendous FOMO and has since birth!
Here are 10 reasons why I love and celebrate our amazing wonderful Scott. (I am limited to only 10 so this will be hard!)
1- Even as a baby, Scott confidently included himself in whatever the family was doing. He came ready for fun and has never allowed himself to be left out of anything the family is doing. And, good thing he is so cool because his brothers haven't minded if he joins the parties, or games or activities.
2- Scott has a kind heart. He is tender and looks out for others. He offers to help me
3-He still loves to get into my bed at the end of the day to read and chat. I love that he loves to be next to his mom still.
4-He is a great friend, eager to be a friend and good at making friends.
5-He loves to read and learn, much like Eric he prefers to read and study good books (so far! Oh shiver me timbers! Technology and screens threaten to sap this love of learning away on every side :(
6- Scott works hard and overcomes challenges! I am so proud of him!

7- I love that he loves adventures! He and his friends have a biking trail that they love to ride through.
8- Scott desires to choose the right. I am grateful
9- Scott is great at playing games and he loves to play games with his brothers!
10- I love it when Scott wants to help me with stuff. He has willingly participated in service, like helping me organize donations I was taking to the Homeless Teenager Shelter. He has been willing to help me take dinner to someone who needed help. He is willing to sing for elderly people in assisted living centers, rake leaves, and help others! He is AWESOME
His 10th Birthday Party
Awesome kids.. Scott always finds great friends
He got a new bike!

Snapshot Feb 2017
Steve just bought our second income property here in Omaha. It is a darling little house, 3 bedroom 2 bath, on a quiet little cauldesac. We worked as a family, fixing it up. We removed old carpet and linoleum, cleaned, painted a little, hung new doors. We had a painter come in and paint the whole place, and had new carpet and linoleum installed. It's great to work together as a family. I am so impressed with how hard Steve has worked on this. He has worked long days, going from his current job to working until late at this house. I am so happy with the two houses we have bought. They are both really nice. I wouldn't mind living in them . The best thing is that both have positive cash flow right off the bat! Yay!
Eric is delightful to have around. He is a deep thinker and has a compassionate heart. He just finished up his associates degree at BYUI and is applying to BYU Provo. He has always wanted to go to school there... We will see. He is working a construction/remodeling job right now and earning pretty good money. He also landed an on call job to clear snow for residents and businesses. So far we have barely any snow! Bummer!
Joseph is focused 100% on school at Utah Valley University. He is really enjoying it. He calls me and tells that something has clicked and is loving this semester and doing Well! I am so happy for him. We loved having him home for Christmas break. He continues to be such a kind and thoughtful son, and someone who just knows how to get things done. He has some terrific strengths. His roommate is a returned missionary this semester. Last semester his roommate was a prospective missionary. He has been so fortunate to have great roommates, including the elders' quorum president and just nice people. I am grateful! His calling this semester is Sacrament coordinator. We visited him in the Fall and went to his ward. It was wonderful to see him in action there and see that he a good relationship with his ward and steps us to serve.
Jonathan . Oh Jonny boy. He continues to work through is struggle with depression. He is trying a new medication now-- Zoloft. We have learned to leave him alone to figure it out, as per the bishop's counsel. I am anxious to see him make progress and we do a little here a little there. It has been nice to have him around. He is happy and a good influence most of the time. When he isn't it's not fun.
Michael . Graduated early. Done in Dec. He never really bonded with Elkhorn South High. I think he was doing better than he realized and encouraged him to stick it out and enjoy the friendships he had made. But, he wouldn't. In light of that, graduating early was a good decision. He has signed up for college classes and is getting an early start. He is using his time wisely. He has looked for another job but nothing has panned out yet. He has been dealing with some mysterious health issues lately and we have been going to the Dr a lot. More info on that another time. He is a sweet and faithful and good son. I am grateful for him. He worked hard and got a 26 on his ACT and has applied to BYU BYI Utah State and Utah Valley University. So far, he is accepted at both Utah State and Utah Valley University. We have taken two trips out to both BYU's. It has been a lot of fun to be with and celebrate our senior in highschool. My heart breaks a little as a realize my days are numbered with him.
Jacob Oh Jacob.. my driven, ambitious, highstrung son. On edge all the time, quick to react and very critical of everyone. He has a loose mouth and is generous with insults for all. It is a sore trial for our family each and every day. I suffer over this... everyone does. We can't seem to reach him and help him through any type of discipline. I feel powerless. With that being said, he will have a good day here and there. Or a good few hours. I am trying to get him to be open to counseling and maybe medicine. Oh but it is tough. On the bright side, he is a driven, ambitious son who is always where he needs to be, prepared and ready for anything. He excels in school and extracurricular activities. He has a solo in his show choir this year again. It is fun to watch him. He is an amazing pianist.. self taught and amazing. Sure wish I could find him the right teacher.
Scott ... Scotty boy. Happy Scotty. Tough Scotty. He has formed more friendships. We hope to encourage more. He loves Ethan Haughwaut in the ward and we are so grateful for this friendship! His neighborhood friendships are sort of fizzling out. So, as far as I am concerned we are good to move if we choose to. No regrets. Ofcourse it is winter... people hibernate. It seems. He is having an ok year with a sort of mean teacher, Mr. Ehlers. He is learning to be tough and deal with it anyway. He went sledding last week, flew off his sled, landed on a rock and put a large gash on his bum bum. He came running home, came in the door and I knew something was seriously wrong. I took a look at his cut and saw a 1" long by 1/2" wide gash on his bum and knew right off we would need to get stitches. His Dr told us to go to Children's Emergency because it was a bad one. So off we went Steve came too. Scott was brave .. shaking and pale as a ghost but tough. He stayed home from school for two days and took it easy over the weekend and was back at school on Mon. I love this kind and sensitive boy who helps without being asked, who looks for ways to make things a little easier for me. He taught family night two nights ago, telling the story of all the place Joseph Smith hid the gold plates. He is wonderful I love him.
Me? I am hanging in there. I have some very dark days here and there. I probably need counseling myself. I will talk to the dr about it when I go. I need to reconcile the loss of my hopes and plans and allow them to change and make the new plans awesome and wonderful. I need to look forward to life as it is and be proactive and make my life as good and wonderful as I can. I find it to be crucial that I "stay by the tree" and do nothing to cause the spirit to leave me. The Lord is carrying me more than I realize.. except that I do realize it when the spirit leaves me, suddenly my life is more than I can handle. So, I must read my scriptures, ponder pray keep the commandments, serve others and do all I can to keep the spirit with me each day. Then I can continue the walk forward. So, I will blog again. It is therapuetic. I have always been a journal writer. I find it helpful to be introspective and writing helps me.

A Typical Morning Feb 1st, 2017
Compared to past years, life is really quite calm.
Typical Morning of our life this year:
5:25 am- I turn off my alarm, wander into the bathroom, brush teeth, wander down the hall to wake Michael and Jacob, my two stellar early morning seminary students!
5:30 - Jacob typically gets UP with gusto, showers, gets ready, and encourages me very strongly :0 to get something for him to eat! It must be packed with protein and very nutritious. I cannot think of offering hi Orange juice (mom! that's as bad as soda pop!) No sugar cereal ! Usually its a quick egg sandwich or breakfast burrito.
5:40 -Michael wanders down in his sweat pants, faithful and good, ready to go.
5:50- we are usually rushing out the door in the dark, driving up the deserted, vacant neighborhood street and off we go making our 10 min trek to the church for early morning seminary. I treasure this time with my two older boys. We don't usually say much, but for that time in the morning, they are all mine. And, there is something cozy and sweet about a warm car, blankets over our laps early in the morning, heading out to study the scriptures.
6:00 AM- Those two faithful boys get out of the car and head into the church to meet with their faithful amazing seminary teachers. (I know because I taught seminary for two years! I cherish those days! Challenging so demanding, but one of the best experiences of my life)
6-7 AM Is my special time. I have taken doggy Lucas on a walk during this time, while listening to my scriptures. Or I use that time to catch up on email, or news. Thursday mornings are special sister time, when Sharon and I sit together in each other's cars and talk. I love this time with her! It is simple and it is sister bonding time. No interruptions.. just us.
6:47 AM- The kids come bounding out of the church, and off we go! We have been known to stop and grab donuts after seminary or something else, but 99% of the time we are heading to the school, where I drop off Jacob to show choir rehearsal which starts at 7 am. We also give a ride to Dylan Vogelpohl.
7 AM- Home and lately I have been reading scriptures with Michael or even Scott sometimes between 7 and 7:30.
7:20 or so - I am proud to say Scott wakes himself up to his alarm, showers and comes downstairs. We will read scriptures for a few minutes, he reads a book, or hangs out, finishes homework, and has breakfast.
7:55 AM- Family Prayer at the door before everyone heads out! Michael and Jacob leave together for school ( on the days Jacob does not have rehearsal) Michael drives to school :)
8:05 AM - I drive Scott to school. I love this boy and every day I drop him off is another day .. that he grow bigger. I love this cute sweet boy.
And, then WOW, for the first time in 25 years I have the day to do what I need to do. I have no demands except that which I volunteer for. I am trying to use my time well! It is a challenge but I love it. I do love getting up early and think this is a great blessing for our family in moving to Omaha.

Oh My Heck! We Live in Omaha Nebraska!
June 2014
For several reasons the past three weeks have been exhilarating. One is that Omaha is so much better than I imagined. It is truly beautiful here. I love the rolling green hills and the plentiful trees. I love sitting on our back deck and watching the beautiful Omaha sunsets. We live in such a pretty neighborhood and the people here are genuine and friendly. I haven't missed the mountains very much because there is so much beauty around me.
One morning I drove to the Winter Quarters to attend the 6 am session with the Omaha Stake. The drive there was breathtaking. I drove along a freeway marked with green hills and valleys and on that particular morning there were white mists here and there making it so beautiful as the sun was rising. After going to the temple with Sharon and Thad, Sharon and I drove to the special cemetery called Lallabye Hill where her little Jacob is buried. (infant son who died within an hour after his early birth) It was a tender moment in an incredibly beautiful place. I don't think I have ever been in such a beautiful cemetery besides Arlington and with my beautiful sister at such a tender little place.
I have enjoyed driving all around town. Omaha is big enough to be interesting and fun but still small enough to be charming and pastoral. I can drive along a main road and still see deep green cornfields off the side of the road here and there. It is beautiful and peaceful.
The storms here are fantastic! Jonathan put it right, "Olympus might be in New York City, but I have strong reason to believe that Zeus has a summer home in Omaha...." And, this is true! We have had numerous thunderstorms since we have been here. The first one we had produced golf ball sized hail. For real! That was a first for me... to see that! The second one came when we were all sitting on the back deck having a family planning meeting. And we noticed the clouds rolling in. There was massive wall cloud forming above our heads. We were amazed. After which a huge storm hit. The wind howled and the lighting and thunder crashed and the rain came down for hours. I think we got about 8 inches of rain that night. I kid you not! It rained hard until 5 am. We watched a great movie that night called, "Saving Mr. Banks." It was a cozy fun family time while the lightning flashed on and on. It was kind of cool when all of our cell phones buzzed with an emergency alert about flash floods all at the same time. Welcome to Nebraska! The weather here is really exciting.
The storms come and sometimes go very quickly but I think they come about every other day. Last night we watched one from a restaurant window and marveled at it. There were sky rockets going off at the same time. So cool. Then we proceeded to drive home into the storm. We are really enjoying the crazy weather.
Scott: "I love my swimming teacher. I really love all the hills and the storms. I am really looking forward to school. I really love church. I love the way the primary does spotlights where they roll a dice and if it says a language we sing a welcome in whatever language we roll on the dice. We play games. My teacher is really nice and she does really fun games in primary. There is this game where on the board where the teacher asks questions and you choose points and the questions are harder according to the number of points. And there are songs included in the questions.
I love the that there is lots of lightning .. including floods a river going down the road. I like the constant lightning.
